ChatGPT and other Generative AI tools

Starting your research with ChatGPT?

Although GenAI tools, such as ChatGPT, may not be suitable for searching for scientific information (at least for now), there are several different applications where Generative AI tools can be used in many ways to support your research endeavoursFor instance, you can use GenAI tools to help you formulate a list of keywords and terms, find information, understand or breakdown a specific topic. However, it is important to understand that Generative AI tools can create convincing information (text or images) that can be used to propagate many different ideas. Therefore, it is important to carefully check the accuracy, factual claims, context, and language of GenAI generated content to avoid using and dessminitating unreliable, inaccurate, false, or biased information.

Here are few examples on how to benefit from GenAI tools in your research:

  1. Generate a list of keywords and phrases or subject tags to effectively search the library databases or Google Scholar for instance for sources on a particular topic. Here's an example using the free version of ChatGPT to generate keywords related to homeland security:

You may even ask ChatGPT to translate the suggested terms into Arabic:

  1. Explain or clarify a complex or difficult concept: e.g., "Explain the concept of emergency preparedness in the workplace".

  1. Summarize an article: e.g., list the main points or key findings; explain the methodology, including its capabilities and limitations.
  2. Ask it to critique an essay you have written for grammar, style, structure, or content, and to suggest improvements. Keep in mind, however, that many GenAI tools will ingest any content you provide it and add it to its corpus of texts or dataset.
